BEng in Polymer Processing
Programme Code: SG_EPOLY_J07
About Polymer Processing
Use of polymers for a variety of engineering, medical-device, pharmaceutical and general consumer applications continues to grow. Polymer Processing focuses on the materials, processes, and tooling used in relation to polymers. Students completing the BEng in Polymer Processing meet the requirements of the internationally recognised Six Sigma Green Belt award. Students receive this award in addition to their degree by sitting an external Green Belt exam.
About this Programme
This bachelor degree programme was developed jointly by the Institute of Technology, Sligo, and Athlone Institute of Technology, in response to representations from the First Polymer Training Skillnet – an organisation promoted by Plastics Ireland with responsibility for training and networking within the polymer industry.
In this programme participants learn the characteristics of various polymers, the common polymer processes (including injection moulding, blow moulding and extrusion) and factors in the design of tooling for these processes. The course also presents modules that are relevant to automated production (such as CIM and Automation Technology and Energy & Utilities Management) and management modules relating to Six Sigma methodology.
In addition to providing ongoing support for this degree programme, First Polymer Training Skillnet provides funding to a limited number of applicants. Further information regarding the programme or funding for the programme is available from Catherine Collins at First Polymer Training Skillnet ( info@firstpolymer.com).

After you Graduate
Typically, graduates will be employed in polymer processing in the engineering, medical device or pharmaceutical sectors. Successful graduates from this programme may apply for the Honours Degree (Level 8 ) in Mechatronics or the BSc (Hons) in Quality Management and Technology, which are offered online by IT Sligo, or for related programmes from other providers.
Entry Requirements
Higher Certificate NFQ Level 6 (Previously called National Cert) in a relevant discipline or Advanced Craft Certificate, or equivalent. Candidates holding other qualifications and/or with relevant experience will also be considered through an RPL ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ process.
