About Advocacy
Advocacy can be defined as ‘a process of empowerment’ which in a practical sense involves representing others in areas where they require support or representing persons who cannot represent themselves.
About this Programme
Designed in consultation with the Citizens’ Information Centre, the programme offers a broad range of practical skills and core knowledge underpinning effective advocacy practice.
The programme is divided into 12 modules that are delivered over four semesters:
Semester 1:
- Introduction to advocacy
- Equality studies
- Communications 1
Semester 2:
- Principles of law
- Disability studies
- Information management
Semester 3:
- Advocacy 2
- Law 2
- Advocacy project/placement
Semester 4:
- Ethics
- Communications 2
- Social administration
After you Graduate
Graduates of this programme have typically developed/progressed careers as advocates/information providers within various statutory and voluntary organisations. Graduates are also well placed in occupying positions in social policy development and lobbying as well as personal advocate positions for people with special needs.
Entry Requirements
Applicants under 23 years require Leaving Certificate (5 Grade D’s) or equivalent. Applicants over 23 must have effective verbal and written communication skills and will be assessed on their suitability for the programme based on relevant experiences and motivation. Those involved in advocacy or information providers’ roles will be given preference where demand exceeds the number of places available.
Note: Students should have access to the internet in order to satisfactorily participate in this programme. Students currently involved in an advocacy or information provider role – paid or voluntary – will be given preference in the application process.

Duration: 2 years
Fees: €375 per module, €2,250 per year
Application Deadline: 3 September 2010
Delivery: Distance: Distance learning will be supplemented by classroom based tutorials that are delivered one Saturday a month (9.30am – 4.30pm) in each of the centres. It is planned to deliver the programme in Sligo and Dublin centres subject to sufficient numbers registering for the programme.
