About Pharmaceutical Science

The pharmaceutical industry is responsible for discovering and producing a wide range of medicines. We aim to prepare students to work in this industry from initial drug design and discovery all the way through to formulating the final product. One of the key goals of IT Sligo is to develop links with industries to ensure our courses offer the skill and knowledge that is required in the current marketplace.

About the Programme

This course aims to provide graduates who can assume positions of responsibility in the pharmaceutical industry. It is broad-based and graduates will be in a position to seek employment in many other areas within the broader scientific community. The course consists of a unique mix of science disciplines based on pharmaceutical and medical device industry requirements. It is multi-disciplinary, and is aimed at producing multi-skilled graduates for a wide range of scientific and production employments.

Included are core pharmaceutical science subjects with emphasis being placed on modern technology. Modules include operations management, drug structure, validation and biopharmaceutical analysis. In addition, modules such as legislation and compliance auditing will greatly help graduates progress in their future careers.

After you Graduate

The healthcare industry in Ireland is currently one of our most extensive and thriving industries. Included in the healthcare sector are biomedical, medical device and pharmaceutical industries. Areas within the sector where graduates find employment include: regulatory affairs, validation, analysis, operations and quality systems.

The BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical science provides an excellent foundation for the student who wishes to progress to the Masters Degree in a range of course options (especially the MSc in Industrial Pharmaceutical Science, which is offered jointly by the School of Pharmacy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the School of Science at IT Sligo). This MSc fulfills the educational requirements for the status of Qualified Person.

Entry Requirements

BSc (Ordinary) or National Diploma (Level 7) in a relevant science discipline at Merit Level or equivalent. Applicants with other qualifications and/or with relevant experience will also be considered.

Award: Level 8
Duration: 2 years
Fees: €500 per 5 credit module, €1,000 per 10 credit module, €3,000 per year
