About Environmental Management

Many organisations develop a management plan or system to implement, manage and maintain environmental goals. This ordinary degree in Environmental Management is specifically designed for people who are required to take an active part in the environmental management affairs of an organisation. It is also suitable for others who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and competence base in the science of environmental management.

About the Programme

The programme will be mainly delivered using the internet (using the MOODLE online teaching application) and students will be instructed in this method at the start of the programme. Online lectures, programme materials, innovative learning, web-links and assessments will be delivered using this platform. There will also be two workshops per semester, where the students will undertake teamwork, lectures and/or site visits to environmental facilities or organisations with functioning environmental management systems.

Course Structure:

Modules Covered: (M = mandatory; E = elective)

Semester 1

  • Environmental Policy and Legislation (M): This module introduces the learner to current environmental policy, and relevant legal instruments.
  • Environmental Water Quality in Irish River Basin Districts (E): The module will enable students to evaluate and appraise issues relating to surface water quality in Ireland today.
  • Natural Heritage Management (E): The module introduces the methods of managing habitats and the communities of plants and animals within them.
  • Communications (E): The aim of this module is to introduce learners to a variety of communication tools and techniques and to encourage learners to become more innovative, accountable and flexible confident communicators.

Semester 2

  • Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment (M): This module presents an overview of the Irish Planning System and associated legislation, identifies the main local and national stakeholders and their roles and sets out the main requirements in relation to the preparation of planning applications, submissions and appeals.
  • Wastewater Management (E): This module will explain characteristics of wastewaters and the design and processes involved in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment systems.
  • Energy Use and Sustainability (E): This module covers the production, use and sustainable management of energy in Irish industrial, commercial & domestic environments.
  • Air Quality (E): This module explores how the atmosphere can be polluted by various activities. It investigates the statutory responsibilities of various sectors in preventing air pollution and considers the measures that may be taken to prevent air pollution at organisational level.

Semester 3

  • Environmental Management Systems and Auditing (M): This module explains in detail the specific requirements of a number of international standards (ISO 14001, ISO 14004 and ISO19011) and the European Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) in relation to the planning, implementation, monitoring, auditing, reviewing and reporting of environmental management systems.
  • Waste Management (E): This Module introduces the concept of waste management at organisational and national level.
  • Water Treatment (E): This module outlines the relationship between drinking water quality and public health and presents the main physical, chemical and biological parameters of concern in water supply sources and in drinking water as set out in current legislation.
  • Environmental Issues (E): This Module investigates local and global environmental issues and explores the relevance of these issues at a personal level and in the workplace.

Semester 4

  • Environmental Management Project in the Workplace (M): An environmental management project is undertaken by each student in their own workplace or in a suitable environment. The project design is appropriate to the particular workplace, e.g. fisheries, other government agencies, industry and local authorities.  Learning outcomes of other modules in this degree are used to provide the context for the project so that the student can demonstrate specialised knowledge across a variety of environmental management areas. The project provides an opportunity for the student to take initiative for developing environmental management in their own workplace or in a chosen facility.

Participants who successfully complete the full programme of 60 Credits will be awarded a Batchelor of Science (Ordinary) in Environmental Management Level 7. The programme will also be available as single modules.

After you Graduate

You will be better informed to work in an environmental capacity in your own workplace. In addition you can also apply for an online Level 8 Honours Degree in Environmental Management at IT Sligo. Employment prospects may exist in varied environmental sections of industries and organisations.

Entry Requirements

Higher Certificate (Level 6) in a relevant science discipline at Merit Level or equivalent. Applicants with other qualifications and/or with relevant experience will also be considered. It is also envisaged however, that applicants with different backgrounds can successfully complete the programme, subject to assessment of other recognised qualifications, and/or recognised prior learning and/or relevant work experience. These candidates will be interviewed for suitability and be subject to prior approval by the Programme Board.
